Gibbs Bookbinding is located on Hollywood Boulevard, conveniently above Larry Edmunds bookshop and a historic bar (in a building with a resident ghost!).
Stephanie Gibbs has worked professionally as a fine bookbinder for twenty years, and received the Master of Arts degree in Book Conservation from West Dean College (England), after completing an undergraduate degree at the University of Texas (Austin). (read more: interview with VoyageLA)
Stephanie has taught semester-long undergraduate art courses at Occidental College, and workshops at Stanford University, the International Printing Museum, CalArts, and other universities. Private lessons are available by arrangement.
She works with edition publishers and art galleries, prop masters and art directors, television and film studios, individual artists and private clients, and institutional libraries and museums. Whether seeking a custom-designed structure to hold a series of contemporary prints or photographs, a single wrap gift or an edition of finely bound books, or a skilled historic conservation of a rare 17th century leather binding, every aspect of the book, from paper to structure, is evaluated and considered.
The artist's books of Stephanie Gibbs are held in collections across the United States. She exhibits regularly at the CODEX International Book Fair, and has participated in shows with the Guild of Bookworkers on a regional and national level. Her artist’s books are held by institutions including: CalArts, Carnegie Mellon, Duke University, Furman University, Johns Hopkins University, Los Angeles Public Library, Scripps College, Seattle Art Museum, Stanford University, Swarthmore College, University of California (Berkeley), UCLA, University of California (Riverside), University of California (San Diego), University of California (Santa Barbara), University of California (Santa Cruz), University of Iowa, University of Southern California, Wesleyan University, and Yale University.
